Skiing above the clouds painting - L'inversion by Mark Gear
Ski Painting: L'inversion by Mark Gear

My inspiration for this ski painting was to capture the beauty of skiing above the clouds.

When skiing above the clouds you just know how lucky you are! That feeling of going up the ski lift in a grey and gloomy atmosphere and then boom you burst through the cloud and into a blue-bird winter wonderland. That's what really inspired me to paint this piece of art. I wanted to capture in a painting that feeling of total awe when skiing above the clouds.

When painting the skier above the clouds looking down onto the clouded valley below, I remembered that feeling when I was there, skiing on the snowy mountain looking down onto clouds below. I imagined all the thousands of people below the cloud going about their daily lives and I was up here skiing above the clouds. How lucky is that?

There were certainly other skiers below the cloud who probably looked out the window that morning, wondering if its worth going up for a ski. Many made the mistake of thinking it was cloudy all the way up. This just made the mountain nice and quiet with more fresh tracks for me!
